Lithology and Thickness
The Sumalan Fm is subdivided into three lithologic members: Lower purple-limestone member of thick-bedded stromatolitic limestone, 13 m thick. Middle member of purple thin-bedded limestone, siltstone intercalated with mudstone, 183 m thick. Upper member of grey stromatolitic limestone, 47 m thick.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The base is conformable on the Bochatetag Fm.

It is in unconformable or disconformable contact with the Yushas Fm of Sukuluok Gr of Qingbaikouan System and the Upper Devonian. A bed of grey-green siltstone, feldspar fine-grained sandstone argillite and slate of 10 m thick lies on the top of the formation, and the upper bedding surface of the uppermost slate shows a rugged erosional surface, which represents an orogenic termed as Tikelik uplift.
Regional extent
